Recycling
East Hempfield Township has a mandatory, commingled recycling program. The recyclable materials will be picked up each week on the same day trash is collected. Even though recycling pick up is available each week, you are encouraged to put your recycling bin out only when it is full. Recycling trucks will make fewer stops and collection will be faster. No recyclable materials are allowed in trash containers. Cans, glass, and plastic bottles do not have to be separated by color or type. To prepare recyclable materials:
- Glass containers should be rinsed and lids removed. (Labels need not be removed.)
- Aluminum and all other food and beverage cans (which are made of steel, tin or a combination of metals) should be rinsed. DO NOT crush cans before putting them in the recycling bin.
- Plastic bottles marked PETE (1) or HDPE (2) should be rinsed and put in the recycling bin. (Labels need not be removed.) Plastic bottles may be crushed. Examples of recyclable plastic bottles include: soda bottles, milk/water jugs, detergent, and most shampoo bottles.
- Newspapers, should be put in brown paper grocery bags or preferably, tie together with string or twine. Place newspapers on top of or next to your recycling bin. DO NOT use plastic grocery bags - it is not a recyclable material.
ITEMS NOT RECYCLABLE:
- Light bulbs, window and auto glass, drinking glasses, and cookware
- Other aluminum products such as foil, pie plates, or trays
- Plastic household bottles designated with a #5, or plain recycle symbol, put in normal trash

CARDBOARD - A recycling bin for cardboard has been placed behind the municipal building. It is for the disposal of non-wax cardboard or what is called “corrugated” cardboard (no cereal boxes, pizza boxes, etc.) All plastic wrap /packing material must be removed. If cardboard is throwing away from your home, it is considered trash, and should not be placed in the recycling bin.
